The promise of formal freedom
The right to speak, organise and choose one’s own life is indispensable. Yet a right may exist while remaining almost unusable for many. People living in existential dependence have possibilities on paper that are blocked in practice by cost, lack of time or unequal power.
Equality does not make people identical. It prevents differences from becoming domination.
Equality as enablement
Deluism does not understand equality as sameness. It means equal dignity, equal political voice and secure access to the means of a self-determined life. Education, health and housing thereby become infrastructure for freedom rather than rewards.
This connection also protects against a second error: material equality must never be created through political disempowerment. Freedom remains the limit and purpose of every egalitarian institution.
A practical test
Every policy can be asked two questions: does it increase the real agency of those with the fewest possibilities? And does it continue to protect dissent, diversity and personal autonomy? Freedom and equality work together only when both questions are taken seriously.
