Freedom and equality as a common ideal

Equal freedom requires more than identical rights. People must be able to exercise those rights under different living conditions.

Rights must be usable by people with little money or influence. Equality is meant to secure that possibility.

Political implications

Social rights should allow people to leave a bad housing or employment situation without losing their means of subsistence.

Independent legal protection would have to remain available against institutions that invoke equality.
